Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's True Danger: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a misguided view of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "woke" agendas pose an grave threat to the continent's identity. However, this perspective rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The true danger confronting Europe is not societal but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Growth Gap Between the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, while a paltry 13.5% increase for the EU. Over this period, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly half of the global top fifty technology firms are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Problem

This widening disparity stems from stronger productivity growth in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in Europe.

This disparity prompts a vital question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is the EU positioned? Most analysts agree it is largely a contest between two between the United States and China, with European nations entering at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several key factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and agile system for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, a factor that limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under a single set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is divided among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these challenges, one can find reasons for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to propose substantial change. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of major reforms.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, these assets could support far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains significant strengths: high-quality workforce, excellent schools and universities, and world-class labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing next-generation technologies, it can still significantly increase economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. But, if it fails to take bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
