Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that individuals who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing these drugs should be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified rebound.

These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the jabs report a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a trigger flipping and you become extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is higher among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
